The Mudejar Pavilion was built by the architect Aníbal Gonzalez as part of an extensive urban development project for the 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition. The pavilion, which functioned as the Palace of Decorative Arts for the exposition, is located in the Plaza de America, part of the arrangement of exhibition buildings set within the gardens of the Maria Luisa Park. Glazed tile fountains, benches, and architecture within the Park refer, often whimsically, to Spain's Islamic past.

Happily retired after a career spent in sales and marketing management, I took photography up as a serious hobby in 2010 after buying my first decent digital camera (a Panasonic Lumix) prior to going on safari to Kenya in the February . I have now changed to a Cannon DSLR. and have had photographs published in the national and international press including the UK, France and Australia as well in the local press and on a regional companies calendar for the last two years. In January 2013 my photo of a 'Three Headed Giraffe' was a finalist in the Wanderlust Travel Photo of the Year in the Wildlife section. In May 2014, my photo of a black-backed jackal was included in A Field Guide to the Larger Mammals of Tanzania (Princeton Field Guides). I live in Bicester, Oxfordshire and enjoy photographing landscapes, wildlife and plants and flowers, both locally and in Europe and Africa.

You never have to eat alone, you can share your meal with several hundred others! The Mercado de San Miguel is one of Madrid's oldest and most beautiful markets. It has early 20 century glass walls (built in 1916) and its original cast iron structure but has undergone a 21st century makeover. It now bills itself as a culinary cultural center. You can buy quality fruits, vegetables, meat, and fish, and browse among more than 100 varieties of cheese. It is a large space strewn with tables where you can order tapas or more substantial fare, along with beer or wine. Stroll around and try alot of different things! I had the paella and a beer and watched the city go by.
Who doesn't love a farmers' market? Here is one in the Plaza Mayor in Segovia Spain. Besides having some yummy stuff you can learn some Spanish too: potatoes, oranges, onions, sweet onions, tomatoes on the branch. The farmers' market happens on Thursday with produce as well as books, clothes, etc. There are also at least two shops selling famous Segovian treats and if you can resist those, you are a better person than I! The cathedral is right there on the square too, although you will have a much better view of it when the market is gone later in the day. The plaza itself is definitely worth a walk around: it was built in the 17th century. On one side is the Town Hall, which was designed by Pedro de Bizuela in 1609. The facade of this building is quite simple, although the front is made of granite. Another side of the Plaza Mayor has the Teatro Juan Bravo, built in 1918. This is the theater where the city has cultural events. There are music, dance, and plays very often in this theater. Juan Bravo was the leader of the rebels in the Castilian War of the Communities (Revolt of the Comuneros) that took place in 1520 and 1521 against Carlos V. The revolt was stopped and Juan Bravo was executed. The arcades of the Plaza Mayor started in 1884 by the architect Odriozola, but finished only in 1917. Today the Plaza Mayor is a favorite meeting place, and if you are lost, stop in the TI for a free map.

Monday Monday - Description:
Facing a long climb on a Monday....is this any way to start the week? Apparently not, since no one was using this route. This is one of the alleyways in Toledo Spain, climbing up from the Bisagra Gate to the Plaza de Zocodover. I love the narrowness and the crookedness. It just seems more interesting than a wide smooth street! Toledo is a municipality located in central Spain, 70 km south of Madrid. It is the capital of the province of Toledo and also the capital of the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. for its extensive cultural and monumental heritage as one of the former capitals of the Spanish Empire and place of coexistence of Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures, as well as the place where harsh religious persecutions were held against the Jews by the Visigoths.
Just Another Day - Description:
For me< I had an exciting day to look forward to. Lots of historic things to see and photograph and just wander around the wonderful old city of Toledo Spain. For this woman, it was likely just another day....going to or from the market, going to work...just another day. Sometimes it's difficult to live in a tourist mecca where so much of the economy is dependent on tourism. You welcome the tourists since your livelihood depends on it, but it is often peaceful and wonderful when they leave. In the current economic climate in Spain, and especially in the winter when I made my visit, I imagine the visitors were most welcome. Still....I can't help but wonder about where this woman was going.
